OUR FOUNDER: LUIS J. HERNANDEZ
Luis Jonathan Hernandez is a visionary leader whose unwavering commitment to driving systemic change and advancing the needs of America's most marginalized communities has left an indelible mark on the social justice landscape. As a co-founder of Youth Over Guns, Luis has been at the forefront of the movement to combat gun violence and create healthier environments for young people, making a profound impact on the pursuit for a world that is safer and more just.
Born and raised in the South Bronx, Luis's deep-rooted connection to the Black Radical Tradition and his personal experiences with gun violence and injustice have been the driving force behind his advocacy. His accomplishments stand as a testament to his strategic prowess in propelling systemic change within the criminal legal system at large, encompassing areas such as bail and probation reform, policing, jail conditions, and legislative measures to enhance community safety and prevent gun violence.
Beyond his role in Youth Over Guns, Luis has worked diligently to advance the legacy of renowned activist and artist Harry Belafonte through The Gathering for Justice. He's lent his voice and expertise on racial justice to advise some of the most notable artists in the music industry, including Shawn Mendes and Demi Lovato. Along with consulting on political campaigns and providing guidance to one of the nation's premier criminal justice organizations, Reform Alliance. His ability to mobilize youth, unite communities, and collaborate with decision-makers has earned him recognition from Fortune 500 companies and government officials as a Gen Z pioneer and thought leader.
Hernandez's work not only inspires but also leads to tangible progress through the disruption of systems of violence and harm that operate in perpetuity. His growing footprint is one of dedication, activism, and the unwavering belief that change is possible when we come together to make a difference.
